Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

St. Isaac's Cathedral

The Saint Isaac’s Cathedral is the largest church in Saint Petersburg, it was built between 1818 and 1858 by Auguste Montferrand. Today it is the 3rd largest domed cathedral in the world standing at 101.5 meters high. Some interesting facts about St- Petersburg

Saint Petersburg subway is the deepest in the world! Some stations are 70-110 m deep and go under the water.

The Hermitage museum has its own army of cats! They protect the collection from rats.

There are more than 300 museums and theatres in Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Russian tsar Peter the Great. During a little bit more than 300 years history the city survived 288 floods.

Saint Petersburg is often called “The Northern Venice”. It’s because of it special geographical position. The city is located on more than 40 islands and there are more than 70 rivers and canals.

The most beautiful period to visit Saint Petersburg is May, June and July, it’s the “white nights” season, when the day is very long and the night is short and not dark, just 2-3 hours of twilight.

During the WWII the city was surrounded by the Nazi’s army. The siege of Leningrad lasted 900 days; more than 1 mln people died of starvation.

The Hermitage is the second largest museum in the world. Its collection is more than 3 million items and if you want to see all the pieces of art spending one minute for one item, it will take you 10 years!

Saint Petersburg changed the name 3 times! In different periods it was called Saint Petersburg , Petrograd, Leningrad.
